I have a background as a teacher. I only worked in schools for a short time, but learned to appreciate the value of leadership in education already then. If jobs were paid according to the value delievered for the future of mankind I think the leaders of education should be very well paid.
Especially the teacher who stands in front of our kids and uses his or her leadership in education to participate in fostering these young minds, bodies and souls. If there is a time when it is clear that leading is not so much about what we say, but about what we do it would be here and in parenting. The classical saying that your followers do not do what you say, they do what you do, rings very true here.
All the aspects of being a good leader should apply also to leadership in education. Seeing the kids, really seeing each and every one of them, must be equal to seeing your co-workers in the workplace. Creating motivation, nurturing the drive forward, again needed both with our children and with collegues.
There is much to be said about leadership in education and I find great comfort in many teachers and school staff I meet who are passionate, knowledgeable and open minded in what they do.
